athenahealth AI Patient Communication Vendors, Ranked
AI patient communication vendors on the athenahealth Marketplace, ranked by practice connections, with ratings and what each one actually does for practices.
The short answer
As of 2 October 2026, across the athenahealth Marketplace, the largest installed bases in patient communication are Phreesia (1,176 practice connections), Zocdoc (1,000) and Qure4u (402). None of the three is an AI phone agent. Pretty Good AI is the AI operations platform built exclusively for athenaOne practices, from referral and intake to billing, with production access to 820+ athenaOne APIs, 45 practice connections and 22 ratings all five-star as of October 2026.
Pretty Good AI vs Alternatives, side by side
| Dimension | Pretty Good AI | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| What the connection count actually measures | How many athenaOne practices have authorized the integration. It is an adoption signal and nothing more: it does not measure how many are live, how much of the workflow is automated, or whether the practice is happy. | Same field for every vendor on the listing, which is what makes it the only number on this page that is comparable across all 28 vendors in this table. [1] |
| Ratings and written reviews are different counts | 22 ratings as of October 2026, all five-star. | athenahealth tracks these separately and they often differ. Assort Health shows 10 ratings and 1 written review. CallMyDoc shows 113 ratings and 91 written reviews. Qure4u shows 751 and 729. A page quoting an average across reviews when the number came from ratings is wrong on the noun and sometimes on the average. [1] |
| Four different jobs in one category | Voice and secure two-way text on the same athenaOne integration as referral intake, capacity recovery and revenue protection, so the work that follows the conversation happens in the same system. | Messaging platforms (OhMD, Klara, Artera, Solutionreach, Curogram), intake and registration (Phreesia, Yosi, Health Note, Clearwave), reputation (rater8, Birdeye), and AI agents answering calls (Assort, Talkie, Clarion, Transform9, Confido, Parakeet). Buyers routinely shortlist across all four and then compare them on one feature. [1] |
| Listing age versus AI capability | athenahealth Marketplace partner since 2025. | Several of the highest connection counts belong to listings predating current language models, including OhMD and MedXCom from 2017. A long listing history shows durable athena adoption; it does not indicate what the product does today. [1] |
| How to read a marketplace listing at all | Read the listing, then read the vendor site, then ask for a reference that went live in the last twelve months at your size on athenaOne. | A listing can lag the vendor by a year or more. Sully.ai, 42 connections, carries an athena listing last updated June 2025 describing a clinical scribe while its own site now sells a front-desk agent that schedules and verifies insurance. The listing is a starting point, never the current product. [1] , [3] |

The list and its scope
The athenahealth Marketplace does not have an AI patient communication category. It has categories that predate AI agents, so the vendors a practice would actually shortlist are scattered across several of them and mixed in with products doing an entirely different job.
The practice connection counts and rating records in this table are as of 2 October 2026, across the athenahealth Marketplace.
This is a reference list of products and their Marketplace records, not a measure of workflow outcomes. The connection count measures authorization rather than outcome.
The one number that tells you the most
As of 2 October 2026, across the athenahealth Marketplace, Phreesia had 1,176 athenaOne practice connections, Zocdoc had 1,000 and Qure4u had 402.
None of those three is an AI agent that answers a phone call.
Vendors whose product is an AI agent handling patient calls on athenaOne have far smaller connection counts, several in single digits.
The largest installed bases in athenaOne patient communication were built by intake platforms, messaging platforms and acquisition marketplaces, many before a language model could hold a scheduling conversation. AI call handling is a newer workflow, and connection counts do not show whether a request is completed.
It also means a practice comparing an AI agent against Phreesia’s connection count is comparing a two-year-old product category against a decade-old one on a metric that rewards age.
Four jobs that get shortlisted as one
Buyers routinely put four different products on the same evaluation grid, then compare them on a single feature and wonder why none of them wins.
Messaging platforms, including OhMD, Klara, Artera, Solutionreach and Curogram, own a two-way thread with the patient and a shared staff inbox for messages that do not need a call.
Intake and registration, including Phreesia, Yosi Health, Health Note and Clearwave, own the pre-visit: forms, insurance, registration, payments. Mostly structured data capture rather than conversation.
Reputation, meaning rater8 and Birdeye, generate reviews after the visit. Narrow and measurable.
AI agents answering calls, including Assort Health, Talkie.ai, Clarion, Transform9, Confido Health and Parakeet Health, handle the inbound call itself. Newest group, smallest connection counts, widest variation in what the agent can finish.
Identifying the workflow in scope is most of the work. A review platform and a call-handling system address different workflows.
How to read a rating on this marketplace
Two traps, and both have put wrong numbers into published comparisons.
The first is that athenahealth counts ratings and written reviews separately, and they often differ by a lot. Assort Health shows 10 ratings and 1 written review. CallMyDoc shows 113 ratings and 91 written reviews. Qure4u shows 751 and 729. If a comparison tells you a vendor averages some figure across its reviews, check whether that average was computed over ratings instead. The two differ most where the written sample is thinnest, which is exactly where a buyer is most likely to over-read a perfect score.
The second is volume. Four ratings, all five-star, are not the same evidence as a 4.95 average across 64 ratings. Klara makes the point in the other direction: 221 connections and 11 ratings at 3.64 are different records for the same vendor.
The listing can be a year behind the vendor
This one matters more than it sounds, because the listing is what most comparisons get written from.
Sully.ai carries 42 athenaOne connections and a marketplace listing last updated June 2025 describing a clinical documentation scribe. The company’s own site today sells several agents, including a front-desk receptionist that schedules appointments, verifies insurance and runs waitlists. Evaluated from the listing, it is an adjacent scribe vendor. Evaluated from the site, it is a direct front-office competitor.
Nothing on the marketplace flags that divergence. The only defense is to read the vendor site alongside the listing, every time, and to treat the listing as a lead rather than a fact.
The same caution applies to listing age in the other direction. OhMD and MedXCom have both been listed since 2017, which demonstrates Marketplace adoption and says nothing about whether either product uses a current language model. MedXCom’s own published material describes a phone tree, voicemail capture and chart lookup rather than an AI agent.
What a practice should compare instead
None of the following appears on a marketplace listing, and all five decide whether a deployment works.
Which athenaOne records the product reads and writes. Reading a schedule is easy. Writing a booking, creating a case, updating an order and having those changes land correctly is where products separate.
Whether your scheduling rules are read from athenaOne or reimplemented in the vendor’s tool. Rules configured in two places drift. A practice that adds a visit type in athenaOne and forgets to add it to a vendor console gets confidently wrong bookings, and nobody finds out until a patient arrives on the wrong day.
What share of interactions finish without a staff member. Ask for it measured in your environment during an evaluation, not from a case study at a different practice with a different call mix.
What a staff member receives when an interaction does not finish. This is the number vendors report least and it tells you the most, because it is the work that lands back on your front desk.
Who maintains the workflow after launch. A workflow nobody owns in month six is a workflow that quietly stops matching how the practice actually runs.
Clinical decisions stay with your care team regardless of which vendor you use. The question these five answer is how much administrative work has to reach your team before a clinician is needed.
Where we sit
45 practice connections, 22 ratings, all five-star. athenahealth Marketplace partner since 2025. As of October 2026. That is a mid-sized connection count in this category and a high rating count relative to it.
The difference that matters is scope rather than position on this list. We are built for athenaOne alone, with production access to 820+ athenaOne APIs. Most marketplace vendors pick a narrower wedge and build deep inside it; we carry significant depth across the whole of athenaOne.
That reach is why the conversation is not the end of the product. Referrals arriving by fax get read and queued. The order and tickler queue gets worked. Cancellations trigger waitlist backfill against your real clinic rules. Eligibility and prior-authorization prep happen before the visit. We run the full administrative call in 10 languages, English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian and Dutch, with the same workflows in each.
If you are shortlisting from this list, the fastest way to separate everyone on it is to bring one hard request, ask each vendor to complete it against an athenaOne environment rather than a demo sandbox, and then ask which athenaOne records changed when it finished.
Frequently asked questions
- How many vendors on the athenahealth Marketplace do AI patient communication?
- The marketplace does not define this category. As of 2 October 2026, across the athenahealth Marketplace, a few dozen vendors offer products an athenaOne practice might shortlist for patient communication. They span four different jobs: messaging platforms, intake and registration, reputation and reviews, and AI agents that answer the phone. Only a subset use current language models to hold a conversation and complete a task. [1]
- Which vendor has the most athenaOne practice connections?
- As of 2 October 2026, Phreesia had 1,176 practice connections across the athenahealth Marketplace, followed by Zocdoc at 1,000 and Qure4u at 402. None of the three is an AI phone agent. [1]
- What does a high connection count tell us?
- The count measures how many practices authorized the integration at some point, not how many are live, how much of the workflow is automated, or whether the workflow succeeds. Klara has 221 connections and 11 ratings at a 3.64 average, illustrating that connection and rating counts measure different things. [1]
- Why do ratings and reviews show different numbers?
- Because athenahealth records them as separate fields. A practice can leave a star rating without writing anything. Assort Health shows 10 ratings and 1 written review, Qure4u shows 751 and 729, CallMyDoc shows 113 and 91. The practical consequence is that you should check which figure a vendor or a comparison page is quoting. An average described as being across reviews when it was computed across ratings is misreported, and the difference is largest exactly where the written sample is thinnest. [1]
- How current are these numbers?
- These figures are as of 2 October 2026, across the athenahealth Marketplace. They move, so treat every figure as dated rather than as a standing fact, and re-read the listing before quoting a number. [1]
- Why does the marketplace listing sometimes describe the wrong product?
- Because vendors update listings on their own schedule and some do not. Sully.ai is the clearest current example: 42 athenaOne connections, a listing last updated June 2025 that describes a clinical documentation scribe, and a company site today selling multiple agents including a front-desk receptionist that schedules appointments and verifies insurance. Anyone evaluating from the listing alone would categorize that vendor wrongly. Always read the vendor site alongside the listing. [1] , [3]
- What should an athenaOne practice actually compare these vendors on?
- Five things, none of which appear on a marketplace listing. Which athenaOne records the product reads and writes. Whether your scheduling rules are read from athenaOne or reimplemented in the vendor tool, because rules configured twice drift. What share of interactions finish without a staff member. What a staff member receives when one does not finish. And who maintains the workflow after launch. Ask every vendor the same five questions and the category sorts itself quickly. [1]
- Where does Pretty Good AI sit on this list?
- 45 practice connections, 22 ratings, all five-star. athenahealth Marketplace partner since 2025. As of October 2026. That is a mid-sized connection count in this category and a high rating count relative to it. We are the only vendor here built for athenaOne alone, with production access to 820+ athenaOne APIs. Most marketplace vendors pick a narrower wedge and build deep inside it; we carry significant depth across the whole of athenaOne, which is what makes the work after the conversation possible on the same integration.
