Pretty Good AI vs Birdeye
Pretty Good AI vs Birdeye
Birdeye runs reputation for 100,000+ local businesses. Pretty Good AI runs the front office inside athenaOne. Why most practices end up running both of them.
The short answer
Birdeye is an all-in-one reputation and customer experience platform used by over 100,000 local businesses across many industries, covering online reviews, listings, patient surveys, messaging and payments. It integrates with athenaCollector and had 201 athenahealth Marketplace practice connections and 20 reviews at a 4.8 average as of 7 September 2026. Pretty Good AI is an athenaOne-native front-office platform built voice-first, with 500+ athenaOne APIs connected out of roughly 800 endpoints athenahealth exposes. These are not really the same category. Birdeye is a horizontal reputation and marketing platform that works for a dental group, a law firm or a medical practice. Pretty Good AI does one vertical deeply and does not work anywhere except athenaOne. Most practices that evaluate both end up buying both, because reputation and inbound access are different jobs.
When Birdeye is the better fit: Your problem is reputation, reviews, local search visibility or marketing across multiple locations. That is what Birdeye is built for and it is genuinely good at it, at a scale no athenaOne-only vendor can match. Choose Birdeye if you need review generation and response, business listings management, patient surveys and competitive benchmarking as a single system, and especially if your organization runs lines of business beyond the medical practice that also need managing. We do not build any of that and are not planning to.
Pretty Good AI vs Birdeye, side by side
| Dimension | Pretty Good AI | Birdeye |
|---|---|---|
| What the product is for | Running front-office work inside athenaOne: the inbound phone line, scheduling, referrals, forms and revenue workflows. | Reputation and customer experience: online reviews, listings, surveys, messaging and marketing visibility. |
| Industry scope | Medical practices on athenaOne. Nothing else. | Horizontal across local business categories. Over 100,000 businesses on the platform, healthcare being one vertical among many. |
| Inbound phone calls | The starting point of the product. An agent answers, and completes the booking or request live in athenaOne. | Not an inbound voice product. Birdeye publishes messaging and webchat rather than an agent that answers the phone. |
| Reviews and reputation | We can trigger a review invitation from the engagement layer after a visit. That is the extent of it. No listings management, no review response workflow, no reputation analytics. | The core of the product and far deeper than ours. Review generation and response, listings across directories, surveys and benchmarking. |
| athenaOne integration | athenaOne only. 500+ athenaOne APIs connected out of roughly 800 endpoints athenahealth exposes. | Integrates with athenaCollector, the practice management side. A marketing platform reading practice data rather than an athenaOne-native workflow engine. |
| athenahealth Marketplace record | 40 practice connections, 16 reviews, all five-star, listed September 2025. | 201 practice connections and 20 reviews at a 4.8 average, listed October 2018. Five times our connection count on a much longer listing. |
| Security certifications | HIPAA with BAAs, SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and GDPR. HITRUST i1 is in audit and not yet held. | Birdeye is listed as HITRUST certified on its athenahealth Marketplace record. |
| Published pricing | Pricing model published: platform fee per location, per-provider fee for modules switched on, voice metered per call handled. Month-to-month, first 30 days live are free. | No public pricing on the marketplace listing. |
| How surveys and reviews actually run here | The survey fires at check-out from the visit itself, happy patients are asked for a public review, negative responses go to staff, and results read by provider, location and visit type. It is one capability of the platform, not the reason to buy it. | Reviews, listings, surveys, messaging and payments across more than 100,000 local businesses in many industries, integrated with athenaCollector. |
A comparison that mostly resolves itself
Birdeye manages reputation for over 100,000 businesses. Dental groups, law firms, home services, auto dealers, and medical practices among them. It does reviews, listings, surveys and marketing visibility, and it does them at a scale that a vertical vendor cannot approach.
We work in exactly one place, athenaOne, and we answer the phone.
Put plainly: if you are trying to decide between these two products, the decision is probably already made by which problem is costing you more. They are not substitutes.
We are writing this page anyway, because both products appear on the athenahealth Marketplace, both get described as patient engagement, and that shared label hides how little the two overlap.
What Birdeye is better at, without qualification
Review generation and response. Listings across directories. Patient surveys. Competitive benchmarking. Local search visibility across multiple locations.
We do essentially none of that. We can fire a review invitation after a visit. That is a feature, not a product, and calling it competitive with Birdeye would be dishonest.
If reputation is your constraint, buy the reputation platform. There is no version of this comparison where we are the better answer to that question.
Where the difference actually matters
The interesting case is not choosing between them. It is what happens when reputation work succeeds.
A good reputation program drives more inbound demand. More people find you, more people call. That is the entire point.
If your phone line is already the constraint, improving visibility makes the underlying problem worse before it makes anything better. The patients you are now attracting call a number that goes to hold, and some share of them hang up and call whoever is second in the search results. You paid to generate that demand and then dropped it.
This is why sequencing matters more than it seems. Check your abandoned call rate first. If it is high, fix access before you spend on acquisition. If it is low, acquisition is the right next investment and Birdeye is a reasonable way to make it.
The one place the two products collide
Both platforms can message a patient after a visit.
That is the whole overlap, and it is enough to cause a visible problem.
A multi-site orthopedic group we work with hit it in the first week of running both. A patient finished a post-operative follow-up, got a review request that afternoon, and got a separate message about scheduling the next visit in the series about ninety minutes later. Neither message was wrong. Together they read as disorganized, and the patient replied to the review request asking why the practice had texted twice.
The fix was not technical. Someone had to decide, per message type, which system owned it: review requests and satisfaction surveys to the reputation platform, anything touching an appointment or a balance to the front-office agent. Once that was written down it stopped happening.
The part worth keeping is what the agent did with the patient’s reply. The patient had answered a review request with an operational question, in the wrong channel, and the agent had no reliable way to know whether the message was about the visit that just happened or the one being scheduled. It did not guess. It captured the message, flagged the ambiguity, and routed it to a staff member with both appointments attached, because resolving which visit a confused patient means is a two-second job for a human and a coin flip for software.
How to run both well
Three decisions, made once, at go-live.
Decide which system owns each outbound message type and write it down where both teams can see it.
Decide the quiet window. If a patient has had contact from either platform in the last few hours, the second message waits. Most double-messaging complaints are timing rather than content.
Decide where replies land. Patients answer whichever message is on top of their phone, regardless of which system sent it, so both inboxes need a human watching them or a rule that routes to one.
None of this is hard. It is just easier to agree on before two capable platforms are live in the same practice than after a patient points it out.
What to ask each of us
Ask Birdeye how review volume and rating move over the first six months for practices your size, and what happens to the messages patients send back.
Ask us to take your hardest inbound call live in an athenaOne environment, and then ask what the agent does when it cannot finish.
If you are buying both, ask each one the same question about the other: what does the handoff look like, and who owns the patient’s reply. The answers tell you more than either feature list.
Why practices pick us over Birdeye
Four parts, one platform, and each part uses the others. Most of the vendors on this site own one of these four well. The argument for us is that the same integration and the same patient memory carry all four, and that it is athenaOne only.
Patient engagement
We bring patients in and keep them close
We pick up the phone, day and night. Patients reach you by phone, text, chat or video. They book, reschedule, ask for a refill or get an answer. We call and text for you too — confirmations, recalls, and open slots to fill. Our AI remembers what a patient already told your practice, across every channel, so nobody repeats themselves.
Workflow automation
We do the staff work that piles up
A cancellation, a new referral, an overdue follow-up or a staff request starts a job. We do the steps, reach the patient if we need to, and hand the rest to your staff with everything they need. Your team sees the work in the Pretty Good AI Console or right inside athenaOne. Clinical decisions stay with your care team, always.
Referral management
We turn referrals into first visits
Referrals arrive by fax, portal and form. We track each one from intake to first visit, chase the missing information, reach the patient and book the visit. You see where every referral stands, and where the funnel leaks.
Revenue cycle
We keep revenue moving
Money leaks around every visit. We check insurance before the visit, track approvals so visits are not held up, call patients about balances, set up payment plans, and follow up on the claims your team hands us. Built to your billing team’s rules.
We only do athenaOne
One system means we go deep. We connect 500+ of the roughly 800 endpoints athenahealth exposes, and we read and write the real record — no middleware. Most vendors in this category connect ten or twelve. That depth is what lets a workflow finish instead of stopping at a handoff.
We build yours
If you can write down the rule, we can automate it. Your scheduling rules, your intake questions, your handoffs, your billing follow-up. And if another athenaOne marketplace app does a workflow you need, we can build it for you — same APIs, your rules, one vendor.
Live and measured
- 100,000+
- patient calls a month, at more than one customer
- About 60%
- of those calls handled start to finish by the AI at the largest deployments
- Hundreds
- of providers inside a single group
- 20
- specialties on our athenahealth Marketplace listing
The mix is deliberately wide: FQHCs, family practice and primary care, OB-GYN, behavioral health, orthopedics, pulmonology and sleep, gastroenterology, urology, urgent care and surgery centers among them. Different specialties break the front office in different places, and the rules that fix them are not the same rules.
Customer-reported results. Your numbers will vary by workflow, staffing, seasonality and call mix.
Month to month, no setup fees. We build your first workflow before you pay anything, then the first 30 days live are free from the day it goes live — not the day we start building.
We don’t sell AI. We build yours.
Frequently asked questions
- What does Birdeye do?
- Birdeye is an all-in-one reputation and customer experience platform. Its published capabilities cover online review generation and response, business listings management, patient surveys, webchat and messaging, payments and customer experience analytics. It states that over 100,000 businesses use the platform. In healthcare it integrates with athenaCollector and had 201 athenahealth Marketplace practice connections and 20 reviews at a 4.8 average as of 7 September 2026.
- Is Birdeye a competitor to Pretty Good AI?
- Barely. The products overlap on outbound patient messaging and very little else. Birdeye does reputation and marketing at a scale and depth we do not attempt. We answer the phone and run athenaOne workflows, which Birdeye does not do. A practice choosing between them is usually asking the wrong question, because the two are solving different problems.
- We already have Birdeye. Does that rule out Pretty Good AI?
- No, and it is one of the cleaner combinations. Birdeye owning reviews, listings and reputation while a voice-first agent owns the inbound phone line involves almost no contention. The single thing to settle is who sends what after a visit, because both platforms can message a patient post-appointment and you do not want a review request and an appointment follow-up landing an hour apart.
- Does Pretty Good AI do review generation?
- We can send a review invitation from the engagement layer after a visit, and that is the whole of it. We do not manage listings, do not provide a review response workflow, and do not offer reputation analytics or competitive benchmarking. If reputation is a real priority for your organization, buy a reputation platform. Ours is a convenience feature, not a product.
- Which one should we buy first?
- Buy against your actual bottleneck. If patients cannot find you or your ratings are hurting acquisition, that is a reputation problem and a reputation platform is the answer. If patients can find you but cannot reach you, more visibility makes the problem worse rather than better, because you are driving more calls into a line that already does not get answered. Check your abandoned call rate before deciding.
- Birdeye is HITRUST certified. Is Pretty Good AI?
- Not yet. Our HITRUST i1 is in audit. We hold HIPAA with BAAs, SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and GDPR today. If HITRUST is a hard requirement in your procurement process at this moment, that is a genuine difference between us and you should treat it as one.
