Pretty Good AI vs Clarion
Pretty Good AI vs Clarion (formerly Anaphero)
Clarion is a Y Combinator-backed AI communication layer for health systems and virtual care, listed on the athenahealth Marketplace in February 2026. Pretty Good AI is athenaOne-only. Where each one wins, and why the two names are the same company.
The short answer
Clarion, which launched as Anaphero and still operates under that legal name, is a New York company building an AI communication layer across calls and messages for health systems, virtual care companies and payers. It raised $5.4M from Accel, Y Combinator and a Sequoia scout, joined the athenahealth Marketplace on 17 February 2026, and had reached 18 practice connections by 5 September 2026 with no published reviews yet. Pretty Good AI is the opposite shape of bet: athenaOne only, 500+ athenaOne APIs connected out of roughly 800 endpoints athenahealth exposes, 40 practice connections and 17 reviews all five-star. If your organization spans several record systems or is not primarily an athenaOne ambulatory group, Clarion is built for that world. If athenaOne is where the work lives and gets finished, depth in one system beats breadth across many.
When Clarion is the better fit: You are a health system, a virtual care company or a payer rather than an athenaOne ambulatory group — or you run several record systems and need one communication layer across all of them. Clarion is built for that environment, its founding team pairs a physician CEO with a voice-AI CTO, and its published customer base skews to exactly those organizations rather than to independent practices on athenaOne.
Pretty Good AI vs Clarion, side by side
| Dimension | Pretty Good AI | Clarion |
|---|---|---|
| What the product is for | AI that answers the call and finishes the work inside athenaOne: booking, rescheduling, referral intake, refills, eligibility, capacity recovery and revenue workflows. | An AI communication layer across calls and messages — scheduling, billing and prescription refills — for providers of several kinds. |
| EHR scope | athenaOne only. 500+ athenaOne APIs out of roughly 800 endpoints athenahealth exposes. | Not athenaOne-exclusive. The athenahealth Marketplace listing is one integration among the systems it serves. |
| Who it is sold to | athenaOne ambulatory practices and multi-location groups. | Published customer base is virtual care companies, health systems and a large health insurer. |
| athenahealth Marketplace record | 40 practice connections, 17 reviews all five-star, listed September 2025, 20 specialties. | 18 practice connections, no reviews published, listed 17 February 2026, 8 specialties. |
| Funding and stage | Bootstrapped. | $5.4M raised from Accel, Y Combinator and a Sequoia scout. Y Combinator W24 batch. |
| Company name | Pretty Good AI, Inc. | Founded and incorporated as Anaphero; goes to market as Clarion. Both names refer to the same company. |
| Published pricing | Pricing model published. Month to month, no setup fee, first 30 days live are free. | No public pricing. |
| Scope beyond the conversation layer | Referral intake, web scheduling and self-check-in, waitlist and appointment acceleration, tickler and order-driven recalls, balances and payment links, surveys, forms signed inside athenaOne, and a free practice report off your own athenaOne data. | An AI communication layer across calls and messages, sold to health systems, virtual care companies and payers. |
First, the name
Clarion and Anaphero are the same company. It was founded in 2023 as Anaphero, went through Y Combinator’s W24 batch under that name, and now sells as Clarion. The corporate record still reads “Anaphero (operating as Clarion)”.
This matters for one practical reason: buyers who did diligence on Anaphero in 2024 and buyers evaluating Clarion in 2026 think they are looking at two different companies. They are not. If you have old notes on Anaphero, they apply.
Two different bets on the same problem
Both products exist because clinics miss a large share of their inbound calls. From there the strategies diverge.
Clarion is building a communication layer that works across the kinds of organizations that have the most calls — health systems, virtual care companies, and at least one large health insurer. Breadth is the point. A layer that only worked in one record system would not serve that customer.
We made the opposite bet. athenaOne only, 500+ of roughly 800 endpoints athenahealth exposes, and no plan to add a second EHR. Depth is the point. Finishing a referral, correcting an eligibility failure or working a balance touches far more of athenaOne than answering a question does, and that surface area is what a general-purpose layer has to trade away.
Neither is wrong. They are answers to different questions.
What the marketplace record shows today
As of 5 September 2026, on athenahealth’s own published numbers:
- Clarion — listed 17 February 2026, 18 practice connections, no reviews published, 8 specialties, requires athenaClinicals and athenaCollector.
- Pretty Good AI — listed September 2025, 40 practice connections, 17 reviews all five-star, 20 specialties.
Read that as a time-on-platform difference, not a verdict. Clarion went from zero to 18 connections in under seven months, which is real movement on a board where most new listings sit at low single digits for a year. The honest summary is that they are early on athenaOne and moving.
Where the comparison actually gets decided
If you are an athenaOne ambulatory group, the question is how much of athenaOne the vendor can reach. Ask both vendors to name the specific athenaOne objects they write to — appointment types, provider groups, template slots, the order and tickler queue, eligibility, the payment lifecycle — and how failures surface. Answering a call is table stakes now. Finishing the work behind the call is not.
If you span several record systems, the question inverts. A vendor that only works in athenaOne leaves the rest of your organization on the old process, and one layer across everything is worth real depth. That is Clarion’s case and it is a good one.
If you are a virtual care company or a payer, we are not the right vendor and will say so on the first call.
What to ask both of us
- Name the athenaOne endpoints you write to, not the workflows you support.
- Show a live practice at our size and specialty, and let us call the number.
- What happens when the agent cannot resolve the call — where does the work land, and who sees it?
- Send the current SOC 2 report and the standard BAA.
- What does the invoice look like at our call volume, in writing, month to month?
Those five answers separate the field faster than any comparison page, including this one.
The honest recommendation
Multi-system, health system, virtual care or payer: look hard at Clarion. Physician CEO, voice-AI CTO out of Amazon Alexa, credible investors, and a product built for exactly that shape of organization.
athenaOne ambulatory group where the constraint is that work does not get finished: depth in one system is the thing that moves your numbers, and that is the whole bet we have made.
Why practices pick us over Clarion
Four parts, one platform, and each part uses the others. Most of the vendors on this site own one of these four well. The argument for us is that the same integration and the same patient memory carry all four, and that it is athenaOne only.
Patient engagement
We bring patients in and keep them close
We pick up the phone, day and night. Patients reach you by phone, text, chat or video. They book, reschedule, ask for a refill or get an answer. We call and text for you too — confirmations, recalls, and open slots to fill. Our AI remembers what a patient already told your practice, across every channel, so nobody repeats themselves.
Workflow automation
We do the staff work that piles up
A cancellation, a new referral, an overdue follow-up or a staff request starts a job. We do the steps, reach the patient if we need to, and hand the rest to your staff with everything they need. Your team sees the work in the Pretty Good AI Console or right inside athenaOne. Clinical decisions stay with your care team, always.
Referral management
We turn referrals into first visits
Referrals arrive by fax, portal and form. We track each one from intake to first visit, chase the missing information, reach the patient and book the visit. You see where every referral stands, and where the funnel leaks.
Revenue cycle
We keep revenue moving
Money leaks around every visit. We check insurance before the visit, track approvals so visits are not held up, call patients about balances, set up payment plans, and follow up on the claims your team hands us. Built to your billing team’s rules.
We only do athenaOne
One system means we go deep. We connect 500+ of the roughly 800 endpoints athenahealth exposes, and we read and write the real record — no middleware. Most vendors in this category connect ten or twelve. That depth is what lets a workflow finish instead of stopping at a handoff.
We build yours
If you can write down the rule, we can automate it. Your scheduling rules, your intake questions, your handoffs, your billing follow-up. And if another athenaOne marketplace app does a workflow you need, we can build it for you — same APIs, your rules, one vendor.
Live and measured
- 100,000+
- patient calls a month, at more than one customer
- About 60%
- of those calls handled start to finish by the AI at the largest deployments
- Hundreds
- of providers inside a single group
- 20
- specialties on our athenahealth Marketplace listing
The mix is deliberately wide: FQHCs, family practice and primary care, OB-GYN, behavioral health, orthopedics, pulmonology and sleep, gastroenterology, urology, urgent care and surgery centers among them. Different specialties break the front office in different places, and the rules that fix them are not the same rules.
Customer-reported results. Your numbers will vary by workflow, staffing, seasonality and call mix.
Month to month, no setup fees. We build your first workflow before you pay anything, then the first 30 days live are free from the day it goes live — not the day we start building.
We don’t sell AI. We build yours.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Clarion the same company as Anaphero?
- Yes. Anaphero is the founding name and the legal entity; Clarion is the brand it goes to market under. Public company records list the business as "Anaphero (operating as Clarion)", and the Y Combinator profile carries both names. If you evaluated Anaphero in 2024 or 2025 and are now looking at Clarion, you are looking at the same team and the same product line.
- What does Clarion do?
- Clarion builds AI agents that handle inbound calls and messages for healthcare organizations — scheduling, billing questions and prescription refills — with the stated goal of recovering the 30-40% of inbound calls clinics miss. It listed on the athenahealth Marketplace on 17 February 2026 and reached 18 practice connections by 5 September 2026.
- How does Clarion compare to Pretty Good AI on athenaOne?
- On the athenaOne surface specifically, the gap is depth and track record. Pretty Good AI connects 500+ athenaOne APIs, carries 40 practice connections and 17 reviews all five-star, and supports 20 specialties on the listing. Clarion is seven months into its listing with 18 connections, no published reviews and 8 specialties. That is a statement about time on the platform, not about product quality — but it is the evidence an athenaOne buyer can actually check today.
- Is Clarion HITRUST certified?
- The athenahealth Marketplace listing records Clarion as not HITRUST certified as of 5 September 2026. Pretty Good AI is also not HITRUST certified; our i1 assessment is in audit and not complete, and we do not describe it as certified until it is. For either vendor, ask for the current SOC 2 report and BAA rather than relying on a marketplace flag.
- Can a practice run both?
- Rarely worth it. Both products answer the phone, so running both means deciding which one owns the main line and relegating the other to a subset of numbers or workflows. If you are genuinely multi-system — athenaOne in the ambulatory group and something else in the hospital or virtual care arm — the sensible split is by record system, not by workflow.
