Pretty Good AI vs healow Genie

Pretty Good AI vs healow Genie

healow Genie is eClinicalWorks bringing its 24/7 patient access agent to athenaOne practices. Pretty Good AI builds only for athenaOne. What the ownership difference means for a practice.

6 min read

The short answer

healow Genie is a 24/7 patient access agent that answers calls, schedules, and handles billing and prescription questions. It is a product of healow, part of the eClinicalWorks group, and it listed on the athenahealth Marketplace in August 2025 with 83 practice connections as of 5 September 2026. Pretty Good AI does a similar job on the phone and then goes further into athenaOne — referral intake, schedule and capacity, revenue protection, KPI reporting — on the same integration. The structural difference worth understanding before you sign is that healow's parent company sells an EHR that competes directly with athenahealth, which shapes where its athenaOne roadmap can realistically go.

When healow Genie is the better fit: You already run eClinicalWorks somewhere in the organization and want one patient-access vendor across both systems, or you are actively evaluating a move off athenaOne and would rather not deploy an athenaOne-only product in the meantime. Both are legitimate reasons and neither is about product quality.

The comparison is mostly about who owns the roadmap

On what the two products do this week, the overlap is real. Both answer the phone around the clock. Both schedule, handle refill and billing questions, and take pressure off a front desk that cannot keep up. healow Genie describes the problem well and is being adopted — 83 athenaOne practice connections in its first year is a serious start.

The difference that will matter to you in year three is who each company is building for.

The structural point, stated plainly

healow is part of the eClinicalWorks group. eClinicalWorks sells an EHR that competes directly with athenahealth for the same practices.

That is not a criticism of the product or the people. It is a description of where the investment goes. Every engineering hour spent making Genie deeper on athenaOne makes a competing platform more valuable, and no company funds that indefinitely. The athenaOne integration is likely to stay good enough rather than become excellent, because excellent is not in the parent company’s interest.

This pattern is not new on this marketplace. Klara has been owned by ModMed since February 2022. Tebra sells its own EHR. In both cases the athenaOne integration stopped being where the energy went, and practices noticed slowly, at renewal.

Ask any vendor in this category who owns them and what else that owner sells. It is a fair question and the answer is public.

What athenaOne-only buys you

We connect 500+ athenaOne APIs out of roughly 800 endpoints athenahealth exposes. Most products in this category connect ten or twelve.

That number is not a boast, it is the consequence of having nowhere else to spend the effort. When athenahealth ships something new, it is the only roadmap we have to respond to. When a workflow needs an obscure endpoint that only matters to athenaOne practices, there is no portfolio review weighing it against another platform’s needs.

It is also what makes the difference between deflecting a call and completing the work. Answering the phone needs a handful of endpoints. Booking against real provider templates, starting an authorisation, chasing a referral and writing outcomes back into the chart needs most of the surface.

Where Genie is the right call

Two situations, and both are about your organization rather than the software.

If you run eClinicalWorks anywhere — a second entity, an acquired group, a plan to consolidate onto it — one patient-access vendor across both systems is worth more than depth on one.

And if athenaOne is genuinely under review, do not deploy an athenaOne-only product. Tell whoever is selling to you, including us. We would rather lose the deal than deploy into a practice that is leaving the platform.

Where we are the right call

athenaOne is where you intend to stay, and the phone is the first workflow rather than the only one.

The practices that get the most out of us start with voice, then turn on referral intake or capacity recovery a quarter later without buying anything, because it is the same integration and the same memory of the patient. That compounding is the thing a shared-roadmap vendor structurally cannot match.

Why practices pick us over healow Genie

Four parts, one platform, and each part uses the others. Most of the vendors on this site own one of these four well. The argument for us is that the same integration and the same patient memory carry all four, and that it is athenaOne only.

Patient engagement

We bring patients in and keep them close

We pick up the phone, day and night. Patients reach you by phone, text, chat or video. They book, reschedule, ask for a refill or get an answer. We call and text for you too — confirmations, recalls, and open slots to fill. Our AI remembers what a patient already told your practice, across every channel, so nobody repeats themselves.

Workflow automation

We do the staff work that piles up

A cancellation, a new referral, an overdue follow-up or a staff request starts a job. We do the steps, reach the patient if we need to, and hand the rest to your staff with everything they need. Your team sees the work in the Pretty Good AI Console or right inside athenaOne. Clinical decisions stay with your care team, always.

Referral management

We turn referrals into first visits

Referrals arrive by fax, portal and form. We track each one from intake to first visit, chase the missing information, reach the patient and book the visit. You see where every referral stands, and where the funnel leaks.

Revenue cycle

We keep revenue moving

Money leaks around every visit. We check insurance before the visit, track approvals so visits are not held up, call patients about balances, set up payment plans, and follow up on the claims your team hands us. Built to your billing team’s rules.

We only do athenaOne

One system means we go deep. We connect 500+ of the roughly 800 endpoints athenahealth exposes, and we read and write the real record — no middleware. Most vendors in this category connect ten or twelve. That depth is what lets a workflow finish instead of stopping at a handoff.

We build yours

If you can write down the rule, we can automate it. Your scheduling rules, your intake questions, your handoffs, your billing follow-up. And if another athenaOne marketplace app does a workflow you need, we can build it for you — same APIs, your rules, one vendor.

Live and measured

100,000+
patient calls a month, at more than one customer
About 60%
of those calls handled start to finish by the AI at the largest deployments
Hundreds
of providers inside a single group
20
specialties on our athenahealth Marketplace listing

The mix is deliberately wide: FQHCs, family practice and primary care, OB-GYN, behavioral health, orthopedics, pulmonology and sleep, gastroenterology, urology, urgent care and surgery centers among them. Different specialties break the front office in different places, and the rules that fix them are not the same rules.

Customer-reported results. Your numbers will vary by workflow, staffing, seasonality and call mix.

Month to month, no setup fees. We build your first workflow before you pay anything, then the first 30 days live are free from the day it goes live — not the day we start building.

We don’t sell AI. We build yours.

Frequently asked questions

What is healow Genie?
healow Genie is a 24/7 patient access agent that answers patient calls and handles scheduling, billing questions, prescription requests and insurance inquiries. healow is part of the eClinicalWorks group. Genie listed on the athenahealth Marketplace in August 2025 and had 83 practice connections as of 5 September 2026, with no marketplace reviews yet.
Does it matter that healow is owned by eClinicalWorks?
It matters for roadmap, not for ethics or product quality. A company whose primary platform is a competing EHR has a limit on how deep it will invest in athenaOne integration, because that investment strengthens a competitor. This is the same structural question worth asking about Klara, owned by ModMed, and Tebra, which sells its own EHR. It is a fair thing to raise with any of them, including in a renewal conversation.
Is healow Genie athenaOne-native?
It integrates with athenaOne and is listed on the marketplace, but it was built inside the eClinicalWorks ecosystem rather than exclusively for athenaOne. Native, used precisely, means a vendor that builds for one EHR only. The practical test is the same for every vendor: how many athenaOne endpoints do you write to, and which athenaOne objects change when a task completes?
Which has more athenaOne practices?
healow Genie, at 83 practice connections against our 40 as of 5 September 2026. Both listings are roughly the same age — August and September 2025 — so that is a fair comparison of the first year. Genie has no marketplace reviews yet; we have 17, all five-star.
What if we might move off athenaOne?
Then say so in the sales process, because it genuinely changes the answer. An athenaOne-only vendor is the wrong bet for a practice planning to migrate, and we would rather know early. If athenaOne is where you intend to stay, the specialization is the entire argument.
