Pretty Good AI vs Superscript
Pretty Good AI vs Superscript
Superscript prices care before the visit and collects upfront. Pretty Good AI runs athenaOne operations from intake to billing. When to run both together.
The short answer
Superscript is a healthcare pricing company based in New York. It calculates a patient cost-share before the appointment using what it calls Healthcare's First Pricing Protocol, underwrites that price so the practice is guaranteed the amount, and collects it upfront through storefronts, a front-desk browser tool and an EHR-facing pricing agent. It had 64 practice connections and 17 reviews at a 5.0 average on the athenahealth Marketplace as of 12 September 2026, and its listing requires athenaCollector. Pretty Good AI is the AI operations platform built exclusively for athenaOne practices, from referral and intake to billing. The two products meet in one place: the money conversation that happens before a patient walks in. Superscript's scope is the price itself. Pretty Good AI owns the phone call, the schedule and the referral that surround it.
Pretty Good AI vs Superscript, side by side
| Dimension | Pretty Good AI | Superscript |
|---|---|---|
| Core job | The practice end to end: inbound and outbound voice and secure two-way text, scheduling and capacity, referrals and orders, forms and intake, and revenue workflows including balance follow-up. | The price end to end: predict the exact patient cost-share before the visit, guarantee it, and collect it at or before check-in. |
| What the technology is built to do | Agentic voice that calls athenaOne tools mid-conversation, so a patient request becomes a booked slot, a routed order or a sent form during the call rather than a task afterwards. | A pricing and prediction engine. Superscript publishes a three-stage model that maps historical claims to negotiated rates, splits each rate into CPT lines, cross-references the payer to resolve the patient share, and retrains on adjudicated claims. |
| EHR scope | athenaOne only. Production access to 820+ athenaOne APIs, with workflows built around your practice's rules. | Listed on the athenahealth Marketplace with athenaCollector as a required athenahealth product. Superscript also publishes an API for digital health partners and markets a pricing agent for the EHR generally, so it is not positioned as athenaOne-exclusive. |
| athenahealth Marketplace record | 45 practice connections, 22 ratings, all five-star, across 20 specialties. athenahealth Marketplace partner since 2025. As of October 2026. | 64 practice connections and 17 reviews at a 5.0 average across 18 specialties, listed under Billing, Front Desk Efficiency, and Marketing and Patient Communications. As of 12 September 2026. |
| Where a pre-visit call goes next | The same agent answers the phone, books or moves the appointment, surfaces the outstanding balance, sends a payment link through your existing portal and captures the intake form, because scheduling, forms and billing context sit behind one integration. | Resolves the price for the service being scheduled and takes the money. Answering the call, filling the slot and chasing the referral belong to whatever runs the front office. |
| Published results | Customer-reported from a 35-location specialty group with 130 providers at more than 100,000 calls a month: over 50 percent call auto-resolution in about 30 days, calls answered in under five seconds, roughly one in eight bookings after hours. | Superscript publishes that practices collect 24 percent more patient responsibility per visit and roughly $10.6k more per provider annualized, and that it prices 3,379 services across 25 or more specialties. |
| Published pricing | Pricing model published: platform fee per location, per-provider fee for modules switched on, voice metered per call handled. No setup fees, first 30 days live are free, month to month after. | No public price list. Its product site offers a 30-day free trial and a demo booking. |
| Running both | Workable, and often the right answer. Pretty Good AI owns the conversation and the calendar; the price and the payment stay where they already work. | Workable on the same terms. The thing to settle first is which system speaks to the patient about money, and when. |
One is a price. The other is the practice.
Superscript works on a problem most practices have given up on. Nobody knows what care costs until weeks after it happens, so the front desk either collects a copay and hopes, or collects nothing and sends a bill into the mail.
Superscript’s answer is to resolve the real number first. Its pricing protocol reads the practice’s own adjudicated claims to work out what each treatment is actually paid at, splits that into the CPT lines behind it, cross-references the payer to resolve what the patient owes, and then guarantees the figure. The practice gets the money before the visit, and the patient does not get a surprise in the mail six weeks later.
Pretty Good AI is not a pricing company. It is the AI operations platform for athenaOne practices, from referral and intake to billing. The money conversation is one of the things it handles, alongside answering the phone, filling the schedule, chasing referrals, and getting forms back.
So the overlap is narrow and it sits in exactly one place: the moment before the patient walks in.
Where the two products actually meet
Superscript’s marketplace listing runs wider than pricing alone. It files under digital check-in, scheduling, patient communications and collections as well as payment solutions. Those are all things Pretty Good AI does on the same athenaOne integration.
In practice the collision is narrower than the category list suggests, because the two products approach the patient from opposite ends.
Superscript starts from a scheduled appointment and works out what it costs. Pretty Good AI starts from a patient who called, and turns that call into a scheduled appointment.
Which means the honest question for a practice running both is not which product is better. It is which one speaks to the patient first, and what it says.
The double-contact problem, and how to not have it
The following is an illustrative workflow, not a customer story.
A multi-site gastroenterology group turns on upfront pricing and, separately, an AI front door. Both are configured to be helpful. A patient books a colonoscopy on Tuesday and gets a price notification that afternoon. On Thursday an automated reminder goes out about the prep instructions. On Friday a second automated message arrives about an unpaid balance from a visit in March.
Three contacts, three systems, one practice. The patient does not experience that as thoroughness.
The fix is not technical and it is not a feature. It is a written rule, agreed before both go live, about which system owns outbound contact for which workflow. A workable split: the pricing platform owns the price and the point-of-service payment, the operations platform owns the call, the appointment, the reminder, the form and any balance still open after the claim adjudicates.
One case stays with a person either way. A patient who calls to say they cannot afford the upfront price is negotiating, and negotiating a payment plan is a decision with staff judgment in it. Route that to a human with authority to agree terms, and configure both systems to stop contacting that account until they do.
Where the difference is architectural
Superscript’s engine is built to resolve a number and stand behind it. That is a prediction problem, and the company publishes that it retrains on adjudicated claims from thousands of weekly appointments so the prediction keeps improving.
Pretty Good AI’s engine is built to hold a conversation and act inside athenaOne while it is happening. The agent is not writing a task for someone to pick up later. It is booking the slot, routing the order, sending the form and surfacing the balance mid-call.
Those are different problems with different architectures behind them, and neither one collapses into the other. A pricing engine cannot answer the phone at 9pm when a patient calls to move an appointment. An agentic voice platform does not underwrite a price.
Who each one is for
If the thing that is broken is that patient responsibility is being written off, the front desk is guessing at copays, and the schedule and the phone line are otherwise under control, then the problem is the price, and pricing is not a workflow we run today.
If the thing that is broken is that calls go unanswered, slots go unfilled, referrals sit in a queue, forms come back late, and the balances are also aging, then the collections number is a symptom. Buying a pricing tool will improve one line and leave the cause untouched.
And if you already run Superscript and it is doing its job, the question is not replacement. It is whether anyone has decided, explicitly, which system talks to your patients about money and when. Most practices have not made that call, and making it costs nothing.
Clinical decisions stay with your care team.
Frequently asked questions
- What does Superscript do?
- Superscript is a healthcare technology company in New York that calculates what a patient will owe out of pocket before the appointment, rather than estimating it. Its pricing protocol maps a practice's historical claims to negotiated rates, resolves the patient share against the payer, and guarantees the resulting number to the practice. It delivers that through consumer storefronts, a front-desk browser tool for collecting at check-in, and a pricing agent that sits against the EHR. It had 64 practice connections on the athenahealth Marketplace as of 12 September 2026.
- Is Superscript a competitor to Pretty Good AI?
- Only at the edges. Superscript is a pricing and collection specialist; Pretty Good AI runs patient access, scheduling, referrals, forms and revenue workflows on the athenaOne integration. The overlap is the pre-visit money conversation and the digital check-in step. Most practices meet this as a question about who talks to the patient first, not as a bake-off.
- We already run Superscript. Does Pretty Good AI replace it?
- Not the pricing and payment layer. We collect patient payments on our web scheduler, but we do not underwrite or guarantee a patient price. The gap Superscript does not fill is the phone line, the empty slot, the referral sitting in a queue and the form that never came back. That is the work Pretty Good AI takes on, and it runs on the same athenaOne data.
- How do the two products avoid talking over each other?
- Decide up front which system owns outbound patient contact about money and write it down. The practical split most practices land on is that the pricing platform owns the price and the payment at the point of service, and the operations platform owns the call, the appointment reminder, the intake form and the follow-up on anything left unpaid after the visit. The failure mode is not technical, it is a patient getting a price notification and a balance reminder from what is supposed to be one practice.
- What is the difference between an estimate and a guaranteed price?
- An estimate is a number the practice gives the patient with a disclaimer attached, so it can move once the claim adjudicates. Superscript underwrites its number, which means it takes the variance risk and the practice is credited the amount regardless. That is a different commercial arrangement from an eligibility check, and it is not something we offer.
