Pretty Good AI vs Zocdoc
Pretty Good AI vs Zocdoc
Zocdoc is the largest patient booking marketplace connected to athenaOne, with 991 practice connections. It is a demand channel, not a front office. Where each one wins, and why the free Book Online button is not the comparison it looks like.
The short answer
Zocdoc is a patient acquisition marketplace. Patients search Zocdoc, see real-time availability and book, and the practice pays for the new patients it brings. It is by far the most connected product of its kind on the athenahealth Marketplace with 991 practice connections, listed since 2017, though its marketplace satisfaction is the weakest of the widely adopted products at a 3.1 displayed rating across 18 reviews as of 5 September 2026. Pretty Good AI is not a demand channel and does not compete for that job. It is the front office behind the door — answering the phone, working referrals, filling gaps and chasing revenue for the patients you already have. Most practices that need both should run both, and the two do not overlap the way the shared word "booking" suggests.
When Zocdoc is the better fit: The problem is new patient volume, not front-office capacity. If your schedule has holes because not enough people know you exist, Zocdoc is a distribution channel and no amount of front-office automation substitutes for demand. Practices in competitive metros, new locations, and providers building a panel from scratch are exactly who it is for.
Pretty Good AI vs Zocdoc, side by side
| Dimension | Pretty Good AI | Zocdoc |
|---|---|---|
| What the product is | athenaOne-native front-office platform: inbound and outbound voice, fax and web forms, scheduling and self-check-in, referral intake, recalls and revenue follow-up. | A consumer marketplace for finding and booking doctors, integrated with athenaOne for real-time availability. A patient acquisition channel. |
| Who it brings you | Nobody new. We work the patients who already call, already got referred, or are already on your panel. | New patients searching for care, from Zocdoc.com and the Zocdoc app. |
| The inbound phone line | Answered, including after hours. Voice is the primary channel. | Out of scope. Zocdoc is a digital booking marketplace; your phones are unaffected. |
| What it costs and how | A platform subscription. Published pricing model, month-to-month, no setup fee, first 30 days live. Direct, not through a representative. | A patient acquisition cost, priced against the new patients delivered. Listed as an Alliance Partner solution available through athenahealth, so pricing comes via an athenahealth representative. |
| athenahealth Marketplace record | 4.8 displayed rating, every one of 17 reviews five stars, 40 practice connections, listed 2025. | 991 practice connections, listed 2017 — the most connected product in this category by a wide margin. 3.1 displayed rating across 18 reviews. |
| Control of the patient relationship | Yours. Every conversation runs on your number, your practice identity, inside your athenaOne data. | Shared with the marketplace. Discovery, profile and much of the booking experience live on Zocdoc, which is what makes the channel work. |
| Referrals, recalls and balances | Covered. Fax and portal referrals worked into athenaOne, recall lists called and texted, outstanding balances chased. | Not in scope. |
| What happens when a Zocdoc patient calls | Answered and booked like any other call, against the same real-time athenaOne availability. | The call is not part of the product. |
| What happens to the patients you already have | Recalls from ticklers and open orders, waitlist backfill and appointment acceleration, prep reminders, post-visit outcome calls, surveys and review requests, and balances collected by secure link. All of it works the panel you already own rather than buying new patients. | A patient acquisition marketplace: patients search, see real-time availability and book, and the practice pays for the new patients it brings. |
Two different problems that share one word
Zocdoc and Pretty Good AI both talk about booking appointments, which makes them look like competitors. They are not, and treating them as competitors leads practices to the wrong decision in both directions.
Zocdoc is demand. Millions of patients search it every month, see real-time availability from athenaOne, and book. It is the most connected product of its kind on the athenahealth Marketplace — 991 practice connections, live since 2017. If your problem is that not enough patients know you exist, that is a distribution problem and this is a distribution channel.
Pretty Good AI is what happens behind the door. The phone that rings, the fax that arrives, the referral that needs chasing, the recall list nobody has called, the balance nobody has followed up. None of it is acquisition. All of it is capacity.
The free button, addressed directly
The most common objection in this category is not about Zocdoc at all. It is this: athenaOne already gives us online booking for free, so why would we pay anyone for scheduling?
It is a good objection and the answer is that you should not. A product whose whole value is a booking widget is competing against something athenahealth includes, and it will keep losing that fight. We would not buy it either.
The question worth asking instead is what the free button does not do. It does not pick up the phone. It does not read a fax. It does not call the twelve patients who no-showed last month, or the eighty on a recall list, or the ones carrying a balance. It does not do anything at all after 5pm except keep accepting bookings from the patients who were already willing to book online.
That is the gap. It has nothing to do with the widget.
What Zocdoc is genuinely good at, and where it stops
It brings you patients you did not have. For a new location, a new provider building a panel, or a practice in a metro where patients shop, that is worth real money and there is no clever workaround for it.
It stops at the booking. The patient who books on Zocdoc then calls to reschedule, calls to ask about insurance, calls to ask what to bring, or does not show up at all. That entire tail lands on your front desk exactly as it would for a patient who found you any other way.
There is also a candid note in the marketplace data. Zocdoc carries the highest connection count in its category and a 3.1 displayed rating across 18 reviews — the lowest satisfaction among the widely adopted products there. Eighteen reviews against 991 connections is a thin sample and we would not build a case on it. But it is consistent with what practices tell us: a channel priced on acquisition gets measured on cost per patient, and that is a harder number to feel good about than a software subscription.
How the two fit together
Run both when you need both. Zocdoc fills the top of the funnel; the platform handles everything downstream — answering, booking, rescheduling, reminding, recalling, chasing.
The only real coordination is availability. Do not have a marketplace and a platform independently offering the same slot. Decide which system owns the rules, and let the other read them.
The honest recommendation
Empty schedule because too few patients know you exist? That is Zocdoc, or something like it, and we are not the answer.
Full schedule, but hold times, voicemail backlog, uncalled recalls and referrals that never converted? That is the front office, and a bigger demand channel will make it worse rather than better.
The way to tell them apart takes five minutes: look at last month’s unfilled slots and work out whether they were unfilled because nobody wanted them, or because nobody got round to filling them. The first is a demand problem. The second is everything this platform exists for.
Why practices pick us over Zocdoc
Four parts, one platform, and each part uses the others. Most of the vendors on this site own one of these four well. The argument for us is that the same integration and the same patient memory carry all four, and that it is athenaOne only.
Patient engagement
We bring patients in and keep them close
We pick up the phone, day and night. Patients reach you by phone, text, chat or video. They book, reschedule, ask for a refill or get an answer. We call and text for you too — confirmations, recalls, and open slots to fill. Our AI remembers what a patient already told your practice, across every channel, so nobody repeats themselves.
Workflow automation
We do the staff work that piles up
A cancellation, a new referral, an overdue follow-up or a staff request starts a job. We do the steps, reach the patient if we need to, and hand the rest to your staff with everything they need. Your team sees the work in the Pretty Good AI Console or right inside athenaOne. Clinical decisions stay with your care team, always.
Referral management
We turn referrals into first visits
Referrals arrive by fax, portal and form. We track each one from intake to first visit, chase the missing information, reach the patient and book the visit. You see where every referral stands, and where the funnel leaks.
Revenue cycle
We keep revenue moving
Money leaks around every visit. We check insurance before the visit, track approvals so visits are not held up, call patients about balances, set up payment plans, and follow up on the claims your team hands us. Built to your billing team’s rules.
We only do athenaOne
One system means we go deep. We connect 500+ of the roughly 800 endpoints athenahealth exposes, and we read and write the real record — no middleware. Most vendors in this category connect ten or twelve. That depth is what lets a workflow finish instead of stopping at a handoff.
We build yours
If you can write down the rule, we can automate it. Your scheduling rules, your intake questions, your handoffs, your billing follow-up. And if another athenaOne marketplace app does a workflow you need, we can build it for you — same APIs, your rules, one vendor.
Live and measured
- 100,000+
- patient calls a month, at more than one customer
- About 60%
- of those calls handled start to finish by the AI at the largest deployments
- Hundreds
- of providers inside a single group
- 20
- specialties on our athenahealth Marketplace listing
The mix is deliberately wide: FQHCs, family practice and primary care, OB-GYN, behavioral health, orthopedics, pulmonology and sleep, gastroenterology, urology, urgent care and surgery centers among them. Different specialties break the front office in different places, and the rules that fix them are not the same rules.
Customer-reported results. Your numbers will vary by workflow, staffing, seasonality and call mix.
Month to month, no setup fees. We build your first workflow before you pay anything, then the first 30 days live are free from the day it goes live — not the day we start building.
We don’t sell AI. We build yours.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Pretty Good AI a replacement for Zocdoc?
- No, and any vendor telling you otherwise is selling. Zocdoc solves demand — putting your availability in front of patients who are searching for care right now. We solve capacity and follow-through for the patients already reaching you. If your schedule has holes because too few people know you exist, we cannot fix that and Zocdoc can.
- What about the free Book Online button?
- This comes up constantly and it deserves a straight answer. athenaOne includes patient self-scheduling functionality at no extra cost, so any product whose entire value is a booking widget is competing with free and will keep losing. That is a genuinely good reason not to buy a standalone scheduling tool. It is not a reason to leave the phone unanswered, referrals unworked or recall lists uncalled, because none of that is what the free button does.
- Which is more adopted on athenaOne?
- Zocdoc, by an enormous margin — 991 practice connections against our 40 as of 5 September 2026, on a listing live since 2017. It is the single most connected product in the front-desk and patient-communications categories on the marketplace. Different job, but the scale is real and worth stating plainly.
- Why is the Zocdoc marketplace rating lower than its adoption?
- As of 5 September 2026 Zocdoc shows a 3.1 displayed rating across 18 marketplace reviews, the weakest satisfaction among the widely adopted products in this category, while carrying the highest connection count on the board. That is a small review sample against a very large install base, so read it as a signal rather than a verdict. The usual reading is that a marketplace channel gets judged on cost per acquired patient, which is a harder standard than software gets judged on.
- Can a practice run both?
- Yes, and it is the arrangement we recommend when new patient volume is a real goal. Zocdoc brings the patient to the door; we answer the door, and we answer it at 7pm on a Friday too. The only thing to coordinate is availability rules, so the two are not offering the same slot from different places.
- Do marketplace-booked patients still call?
- Constantly — to reschedule, to ask what to bring, to check whether you take their insurance, to cancel. Acquisition is one moment; the relationship afterwards is phone calls, texts and forms. That entire tail is front-office work regardless of how the patient first found you.
